Before explaining the types of visa, you must set the country in accordance with the treaties and permissions. We have divided the countries into three groups:

Group A: Schengen treaty eliminated the borders between EU countries, it means that if you are the source of some of these member countries, no need to apply for a visa for Germany.

Group B: For the following countries listed not need a visa for a stay less than 90 days: Albania, Adorra, Antigua and Barbuda, Macedonia, Argentina, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Brunei Darussalam, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Canada, Chile , Costa Rica, Croatia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Israel, Japan, South Korea, Macedonia, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mexico, Monaco, Montenegro, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Saint Kitts and Nevis, San Marino, Singapore, Holy See, Serbia Montenegro, Seychelles, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao, Uruguay, USA and Venezuela.

Group C: If your country does not fall in the above lists, whatever the time you plan to visit Germany, you need to apply for a visa when you still in your origin country.


Visa for Tourism

Tourists from countries of the “Group A” can visit Germany with passport or identity card.

Travelers from countries of the “Group B” are exempt from visa for entry to Germany (for tourism or business to stay up to 90 days).

The documentation required for entry are original passport valid for at least six months and international travel insurance purchase voucher. It is also advisable to take confirmed return flight ticket, sufficient resources to stay (cash and debit or international card) and proof of residence (confirmation of booking in a hotel, hostel, Airbnb, etc.).

Countries of the “Group C” need to check the laws and consult the local consulate for more information about the visa application process.

Residence Permit/Visa for Language School (Sprachschule)

Students interested in studying German for a period longer than 90 days can apply for a visa for language school that will allow you to stay in the territory for a maximum period of one year, without the right to work. The visa can be obtained in their country of origin or in Germany.

The following documents (not applicable to Group A countries) are required for visa application to study at language school for a period exceeding 90 days:

  • Completed form to the visa application;
  • recent biometric photograph;
  • proof of enrollment from your German course;
  • Proof that you have the economic resources needed to finance their stay in lock account in Germany;
  • household registration in the city (Anmeldung);
  • Return flight ticket;
  • health insurance covering the entire period of your stay, with no limits in urgent cases (Read more).

Residence Permit/Visa for University Students

Students who are interested in applying to Universities in Germany and are from outside the European Union must apply for their visa for admission to the desired course. The visa lasts two years and is renewable if necessary.

To request this visa, the following documents are required:

  • valid passport;
  • recent biometric photograph;
  • A letter of admission / intent by the University;
  • Proof that you have the economic resources needed to finance their stay in a bank account in Germany or by confirmation of a scholarship;
  • household registration in the city (Anmeldung);
  • In special cases: Proof of knowledge of German;
  • health insurance covering the entire period of your stay, with no limits in urgent cases (Read more).

Visa for Job Seeker

This visa allows foreign professionals with higher education qualifications to remain at most for six months in Germany to look for a job position in order to find a placement that matches with your professional qualification.

The German representation issue a called national visa valid up to six months. The visa does not allow the exercise of paid activity. Once you have found a place, you need to apply for a residence permit or an EU Blue Card in the Department of the new place of residence Foreigners. Please note in each case that there is any right to grant a visa to look for a job vacancy in Germany. German representations and possibly the Department of Foreign competent, examine the documentation submitted in each individual case to decide whether the requested visa may be granted.

To request this visa, the following documents (not applicable to Group A countries) are required:

  • valid passport;
  • recent biometric photograph;
  • Application for granting a residence permit;
  • Declaration under paragraph 2, point 8 of Article 54 in conjunction with Article 53 of the German Law on residence (Aufenthaltsgesetz).;
  • household registration in the city (Anmeldung);
  • Curriculum describing the training and professional experience, certificates and diplomas etc;
  • German diploma of completion of higher education or foreign diploma of completion of higher education recognized and comparable to a German diploma. Foreign diploma of completion of higher education should be legalized and be accompanied by a translation in German language made by a sworn translator;
  • Motivation letter indicating the search details of job (branch, region, place of residence / planned accommodation etc.);
  • If there: other vouchers on the preparation of the search job vacancy;
  • Vouchers with mention of sufficient resources to bear the living costs both for the period of intended stay and for the return trip to the country of origin or residence or financial commitment agreement;
  • Proof of a valid travel health insurance (at least in the first three months after entering the country with a coverage of at least € 30,000 or $ 50,000).

Residence Permit/Visa for Freelancers

You can apply for a visa to work as a freelancer directly to a German embassy in your home country, but you can also travel to Germany and apply for this visa here (Group B).

To request this visa, the following documents (not applicable to Group A countries) are required:

  • Valid passport: 1 current biometric photo, 35mm x 45 mm, the German standards;
  • Form “Antrag auf eines Erteilung Aufenthaltstitels” (residence permit for Application);
  • Household registration in the city (Anmeldung);
  • Business plan (Only finance);
  • Projection of revenues;
  • Curriculum vitae;
  • Career details, qualifications, certificates, diplomas, old references;
  • If any, approval of the Federal Employment Agency;
  • Health insurance voucher (travel health insurance for the first three months after entering the country with a coverage of at least € 30,000 or $ 50,000 – prior to the granting of a residence permit by the Department of Foreign Affairs (see Item I) is necessary to hire a longer health insurance in Germany). The health insurance must be valid from the first day of entry planned in the country.

Residence Permit/Visa for Workers

Under certain conditions, foreign citizens can receive a work permit and a visa to start a professional activity in Germany. This type of visa must be issued in your country of origin, before your travel to Germany.

Working visas usually require the approval of the Federal Employment Agency and possibly the Department of Foreign Affairs. The processing time varies widely. For the processing of your visa application you should provide around six weeks (counting from the date of delivery of the complete documentation).

The German representation issues the so-called national as a rule, it is valid for three months. Within the period indicated in the visa sticker, you can travel to Germany (you can pass in transit through Schengen states) and must register at the Department of Foreign Affairs responsible for your new place of residence immediately after entering the country. It is there that you will receive your residence permit.

To apply for a visa, you must submit the following documentation in the original with two copies:

  • Online Application form;
  • Passport (with a validity of minimum 6 months);
  • 2 current biometric photos with a light background;
  • Demand Draft for the visa application fees addressed to “Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany, (City of Consulate, example: NY).”;
  • Employment offer letter;
  • Curriculum vitae;
  • Mark-sheets, certificates and other relevant supplementary documents;
  • Travel and Health insurance;
  • Document asserting a clean criminal record;
  • Minimum of 2 photocopies of the above mentioned documents;
  • Declaration of credibility of the submitted documents.

Residence Permit/Visa for Family Reunion

This type of visa is for foreigners who wish to live in Germany with his/her partner, for both cases where the spouse is already in Germany and the cases in which both are traveling together (either spouse is a German citizen or have a permit for residence and/or work visa).

The process of applying for this visa can be done in Germany, at the Department of Immigration responsible for the city or region where you wish to live.

To apply for a visa, you must submit the following documentation in the original with two copies:

  • Valid passport;
  • 2 current biometric photos with a light background;
  • Form “Antrag auf eines Erteilung Aufenthaltstitels” (residence permit for Application)
  • If you got married outside Germany: your translated and legalized marriage certificate;
  • If you got married in Germany: your German marriage certificate or family book extract;
  • Copy of the spouse’s passport and, if the spouse doesn’t belong to any nationality of the countries of the European Union also submit a copy of his/her residence permission;
  • Health insurance voucher (travel health insurance for the first three months after entering the country with a coverage of at least € 30,000 or $ 50,000 – prior to the granting of a residence permit by the Department of Foreign Affairs (see Item I) is necessary to hire a longer health insurance in Germany). The health insurance must be valid from the first day of entry planned in the country;
  • If the spouse already lives in Germany: (i) copy of confirmation of residence registration (Meldebescheinigung); (ii) copy of the rent contract (doesn’t apply to family reunion with German spouse resident in Germany) e (iii) copy of income (for example, income tax returns or employment contract with mention of the monthly remuneration. It doesn’t apply to family reunion with German spouse resident in Germany).
